I Grandi navigatori / 4 – Bernard Moitessier

Per molti Bernard Moitessier è stato il più grande. Ha compiuto imprese incredibili e aveva un talento unico nel raccontarle. I suoi libri sono in grado di traportare il lettore in barca con lui e ti danno l’impressione di vivere la navigazione in prima persona.

Bernard nacque ad Hanoi nel 1925 e già da piccolo iniziò a navigare su qualsiasi tipo di imbarcazione. Finita la seconda guerra mondiale decise che era tempo di partire, tempo di iniziare la vita sul mare. Lo fece a bordo dello Snark (lo stesso nome che Jack London diede al suo piccolo yacht), navigando nel mar della Cina fino a quando, a Singapore dovette abbandonare la barca ormai consumata dalle teredini. Lo Snark sarà la prima barca persa da Moitessier ma questo non lo scoraggiò (e non lo scoraggiarono le mille disavventure di quel viaggio, tra cui l’accusa di essere una spia).

Ripartì nel 1952 a bordo della giunca Marie-Thérèse e dopo aver attraversato lo stretto di Malacca e aver affrontato in solitaria si incagliò sugli scogli delle isole Chagos. E’ bene ricordare che errori di carteggio erano molto più probabili in quell’epoca in cui la navigazione era perlopiù stimata e in cui l’elettronica non esisteva.

Dopo il naufragio riuscì a raggiungere le isole Mauritius dove riuscì ad autocostruire Marie-Thérèse II svolgendo diversi lavori occasionali. E’ incredibile la forza d’animo di questo marinaio che persegue ostinatamente il suo sogno nonostante tutto. Con la nuova giunca navigò fino alle Antille facendo tappa in Sud Africa. E’ emozionate il racconto dell’ultimo tratto di quel viaggio dove Bernard, per non tardare ad un appuntamento con una donna della quale si era innamorato, tirò un pò troppo la corda e, a causa di un colpo di sonno, finì nuovamente a scogli, perdendo anche questa barca.

A questo punto, siamo tra la metà e la fine degli anni 50, Bernard è molto demoralizzato, senza barca e senza soldi. Tornò in Europa a bordo di una petroliera e finì la stesura del suo primo libro “Vagabondo dei mari del Sud”. Si mise a fare lavori di ogni genere continuando a coltivare il suo sogno. Questo sogno iniziò a concretizzarsi nell’incontro con un industriale che gli mise a disposizione i materiali per la costruzione di quella che diventerà la sua barca famosa, una vera icona della storia della navigazione in solitario, il Joshua. Chiamata così in onore di Slocum era un ketch di acciaio di 12 metri .Diventarono famosi i suoi alberi, costruiti con i pali del telegrafo.

Siamo nel 1963 ed è tempo per Bernard di tornare in mare. Dopo un paio d’anni in cui Joshua navigò in Mediterraneo si presenta l’occasione per una nuova grande avventura. Assieme a Francoise partirono per un incredibile viaggio di nozze. Marsiglia, Canarie, Canale di Panama, Galapagos e infine Tahiti. Ma l’impresa veramente incredibile ci fu al ritorno con la coppia che decise di passare da Capo Horn per un totale di 14000 miglia senza scalo fino all’arrivo ad Alicante in Spagna nel 1966. Questo viaggio diventerà un libro stupendo (Capo Horn alla vela) in cui la descrizione tecnica del viaggio si fonderà con una capacità introspettiva fuori dal comune.

Il primo grande viaggio del Joshua

Chiunque, dopo un viaggio del genere, si sarebbe ritenuto soddisfatto. Ma non Moitessier. Ha un progetto che non gli dà pace, il giro del mondo in solitaria senza scalo passando per i tre grandi capi. Coglierà l’occasione nel 1968 partecipando alla competizione organizzata dal Sunday Times, il Golden Globe la prima regata di questo genere nella storia. L’impresa era considerata ai limiti delle possibilità umane. Moitessier partì da Plymouth il 22 Agosto 1968 e fin da subito che aveva tutte le carte in regola per vincere il premio messo in palio (5000 sterline, una somma notevole all’epoca). Passato Capo Horn però Bernard cambia idea e compie quello che rimarrà per sempre uno dei momenti più esaltanti per coloro i quali sono affascinati dalla navigazione d’altura. Decise che non era ancora tempo per tornare a casa, cambiò la rotta e puntò nuovamente verso capo di Buona Speranza, attraversò nuovamente l’oceano Indiano e, dopo metà oceano Pacifico, gettò l’ancora a Tahiti il 21 Giugno 1969. 10 mesi di mare e 37000 miglia in solitaria senza scalo. Incredibile! Con questa impresa, raccontata in un libro capolavoro (La lunga rotta) Bernard Moitessier entra definitivamente nella leggenda.

Bernard visse il resto della sua vita in Polinesia, portando avanti campagne ambientaliste e per il disarmo nucleare, lasciandoci in eredità “Tamata e l’Alleanza” un vero e proprio testamento spirituale dell’uomo e del marinaio di cui tutti noi vorremmo ripercorrere le orme.
